The material is presented as a classical description of the disease entities meeting the requirements of a lecture presentation.
The lecture clarifies the definition, classification, and characteristics of the different types of diabetes mellitus with their etiology, pathogenesis and clinical picture. The principles of diagnosing manifested diabetes mellitus and pre-diabetic conditions are explained, as well as screening criteria and follow-up. Management of diabetes is presented in detail – training, dietetic and physical regimen, peroral antidiabetic agents with mechanism of action and adverse effects; principles of insulin treatment, administration of insulin analogues and incretin-based treatment. The second part of the lecture presents in detail the acute complications (hypoglycaemia, ketoacidosis, non-ketotic hyperosmolar coma.
